Facts/History

The Fairmead property has a rich history.  Several delightful artifacts have been discovered that tell some of the past.  Indian artifacts, whiskey stills, wagon wheel rims, agricultural implements have all been found probably just where they had been last used.   The property is literally nestled against the slopes of the Appalachian mountains very near South Carolina's  Table Rock State Park.   The Foothills Trail connect the State Park to the Appalachian Trail.  Other public land near its border include the Jocassee Gorges Management Area, Lake Keowee, and Lake Jocassee.  We're less than an hour from Interstate-85 at the South Carolina-Georgia borger.

The farm's original homestead still stands .   Historically, the home was fed by a spring, in such a way that the water constantly ran through the kitchen sink and back to the creek.  Though there is currently no running water or electricity in the home, we have restored its structural integrity.

One day, a visitor asked us about the "rock house" up in the wooded hollers.  I must confess I didn't know what he was talking about. The old fella just laughed and left me guessing about the whereabouts of the rock house.  As he rode away, he made some reference to the whiskey still up at the rock house.  I knew, then, that I could find the rock house if I could locate the remains of the still.  Locating the site in the rugged terrian was not without its challenges.  But, there couldn't be too many spots that had remained hidden.  Within the hour, I had located the old still site underneath a rock boulder jutted out over another rock shelf that likely provided a refuge during fowl weather.

The Birchwood Center for Arts and Folklife is an organization dear to us.  This organization recognizes the significance of the area and its rich legacy.  The organization is focused on preserving this legacy.  We hope that what we are doing at Fairmead will help to promote the organizations ambitions.  Visit their website to see what exciting activities they are (have) planning.
